From the organizers

Since moving to Chicago from the West Coast in 2002, saxophonist, clarinetist, flutist, and composer Jeff Chan has made a strong contribution in elevating the city's Asian American jazz scene and overall ethnic consciousness. Known for his performances with esteemed members of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) including Mwata Bowden, Ari Brown and Edward Wilkerson, he makes his festival debut as a leader, accompanied by bassist Ausberto Acevedo and drummer Vijay Anderson.  The @chicagojazzfestival is programmed by the Jazz Institute of Chicago and produced by @chicagodcase. The Jeff Chan Trio

Chicago multi-instrumentalist Jeff Chan is dedicated to performing music inspired by the Asian American cultural perspective. This performance marks his debut leading his own ensemble at the Chicago Jazz Festival. The Jeff Chan Trio brings together Chicago bassist Ausberto Acevedo and long-time collaborator, NY-based drummer, Vijay Andeson. The ensemble performs broad-ranging music informed by free jazz, contemporary/new music and other creative practices, utilizing free improvisation and Chan's composition to create its distinctive sound.

Chicago multi-instrumentalist/composer Jeff Chan is dedicated to advancing the understanding of the Asian American experience through music. He has worked with many of the leaders of the Asian American creative music movement, including saxophonist Francis Wong and bassist Tatsu Aoki as well as some of the top figures from the Chicago music scene such as saxophonists Jimmy Ellis, Mwata Bowden and Edward Wilkerson Jr., trumpeter Ameen Muhammad, drummer Avreeayl Ra and pianist/vocalist/bandleader Yoko Noge. With a discography of more than 20 recordings as a leader, sideman and producer, Chan has performed extensively in the Chicago area, across the nation and in Europe and has received awards from the Illinois Arts Council, Arts Midwest, Meet The Composer, and the San Francisco Arts Commission. Critics have said that Chan is “… a voice to be reckoned with… (Brian Gilmore, JazzTimes)” and that his work is “music of uncommon majesty, spirituality and emotional depth (Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune).”

Ausberto Acevedo is a bassist, composer, improviser, and teacher performing regularly both live and in the studio. Ausberto has performed or recorded with a variety of musicians including Gino Robair, Kyle Bruckmann, Jason Stein, Guillermo Gregorio, Keefe Jackson, Frank Gratkowski, Sebastian Strinning, Jaimie Branch, Dan Bitney, and Jim Baker.

Vijay Anderson is a freelance drummer, bandleader, composer, and teacher based in Brooklyn, New York. As a bandleader, he has led several ensembles and released five albums under his own name. As a sideman, Anderson has played with numerous bandleaders and appears on over 30 independent releases. Anderson has played everything from street corners and local bars, to major Jazz festivals and international tours. He holds an MFA in music performance from Mills College and a BA in music performance from San Francisco State University. Anderson continues working on creative music and performs in various ensembles in Brooklyn and beyond.
