About this event

AIRMW presents Tokyo-based artist and curator Naoki Nakatani's solo performance:

ひとつからふたつでてまたひとつになる。/ One becomes Two becomes One.

This bilingual performance incorporates embedded lectures and investigates the construction of information made up with memory, and truth. Japanese-to-English translation frequently results in associations between words that resemble a see-saw or a sun and moon, in addition to reflecting cultural and linguistic differences. "I have to return to Tokyo" for instance, might be translated as「もうシカゴには居れません」.  The translation suggests that one must leave Chicago in perpetuity.  Despite the different nuances of returning and leaving, the conclusion means the same. Is this an error? The use of negative and positive words seeks to fill a hole to construct one piece of information.

Naoki Nakatani is a performance artist from Japan, whose work emphasizes the system of coexistence, both in social and micro scale. Each fragment of the world compromises and contradicts with one another. They make such shifts (performance) to stay together. Interpreting performance as a force, he facilitates systematic events that draw attention to our never ending participation in the world.
